Why are pedigreed hedgehogs important?
Genetics matter!
A pedigreed hedgehog is not about money. The genetic pool of hedgehogs in the Untied States is quite small. Without a pedigree, it is very likely that a hedgehog you purchase is inbred. Inbreeding leads to a host of health issues, including Cancer and Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS). Pet stores, show exhibitors and even small breeders fail to pedigree. If you don't get a hedgehog from us, please make sure your quill baby comes from a pedigreed breeder (we can refer you if needed).

Breeding Only Sweet Temperament Hedgehogs
At Sugar And Spice Hedgies our hedgehogs for sale begin with every pairing being made with three important requirements in mind. Namely, the only hedgehog babies available were bred to ensure:
1.) All hedgehog babies are not genetically related or line bred. Every hedgehog is pedigreed and only healthy hedgehogs with no known congenital issues within their lines are bred;
2.) Baby hedgehogs are only from calm, sweet temperament parents. Babies are socialized as soon safety allows and are both handled and introduced to normal home-life stimulus while young; and
3.) The baby hedgehog will be friendly and well-adjusted to ensure quick and easy bonding with their new human.
Small-Scale Breeder Attention
We keep only a smaller number of hedgehogs and only have a few baby hedgehogs at a time. This ensures that each breeding hedgehog receives lots of love, attention, out of cage time and play. Additionally, each baby in a litter is given lots of love and attention as soon as safety allows. Babies are exposed to normal home sounds and activities, different adults/children and in-home pets to ensure that when they go to their forever home they are friendly, less frightened, well-adjusted and importantly sweet. Having our babies bond quickly with their human is a top priority.
